MEP Consulting versus Mechanical Contractor

I graduate at the end of this semester, and I've been going through the never ending process of interviews over the last couple of semesters. I am looking at MEP consulting engineering firms as well as mechanical contractors that feature design-build. I had an internship at a consulting firm a few years back, and it seemed like a lot of repetition of placing stuff in AutoCAD/Revit and letting the computer do the actual engineering. I had another internship with a mechanical contractor over this past winter break, during which I focused more on the estimation part of the job, but didn't really get exposed to any actual design. It seems like these mechanical contractors with design-build don't actually do much design-build, and I'm not sure with what actual engineering that leaves me with. My questions here are: 1) what exactly does an MEP consulting engineer do past make designs in various software systems? Do they interact with installation at all, other than correcting the contractors' confusion regarding the designs? 2) If a mechanical contracting firm doesn't do much of their own design, what does a mechanical engineer end up doing? Would I be likely to be in a role more like a project manager, being out on site more and being in charge of large groups of people as opposed to designing and engineering? 3) For those who have experienced both sides, which would you recommend, especially to an entry level mechanical engineer who is seeking his PE license? Is there a notable difference in salary?
