I've been studying ME at university for 3 years, with this current year being an internship for an engineering firm in the UK. I choose this degree because I've always had a talent for maths & physics and thus everyone around me advised me that it was a good course to do and that I would find it interesting and earn loads of money; rather than because I had a real passion for it and I had little other guidance to go on. As I've grown older I've realised that being happy with what I do with my life is all I care about and doing something that I love to get up for the in morning is all I want.
I've had doubts about my course from day one, not really enjoying any of what I've been doing and finding I have very little in common with the majority of people on my course. I was hoping this internship would prove to me that once I graduated and got a job then my doubts would be alleviated; however I've hated this year and found it completely uninteresting, mainly being stuck at a computer all day analysing data and writing reports. I understand this could simply be the wrong company for me but when I've had doubts about ME from the get-go, and I just don't find myself to have any outstanding interest in ME fields (cars, aerospace etc.) I worry I'm simply in the wrong pathway.
Due to how finance works for students in the UK, finishing my degree and then starting another is out of the question, so if I were to want to start a different degree I need to change now. My main interest is music and I've been looking at a music and audio production degree but it's obviously a very difficult industry to get into compared to engineering which has a much more "streamlined" pathway into a career.
I'm just looking for some advice before I give up on engineering altogether, and what jobs etc. others have worked with a mechanical engineering degree and have led them to an interesting and enjoyable career?
