How to pursue a career as a Engineer in project management?

Hi everyone, I have recently graduated from a mechanical engineer bachelor's and was thinking if I should pursue my professional career as a project manager engineer and where to begin besides of applying for a job as assistant? I am all about the books and pretty self-discipline, where should I start?
