I'm currently interning and have been tasked with my first project but have hit a roadblock. Key note: I have been at the firm for ~2 years but this is my first project that really connects to my degree and would really like to do it well.
The first roadblock I have hit is choosing the right pump sizes so I can find an estimate. Basically I am looking at pumping product from a storage tank to a nearby rack. I am trying to use the data I have and set it up like a fluid mechanics problem but am realizing this may not be how it is actually done.
What I know :
- Flow rate is 600 gpm &1200 gpm
- Pipe size is 4"
- Pressure at the outlet of the pump doesn't seem to need to be constrained but vendor told me that his system usually
sees 60 - 80 psi at the inlet to his system ( this pump would be feeding into that system )
- Flow is coming from a large storage tank
First Step - I took was an energy balance
Pressure 1 + KE + PE = Pressure 2 + KE 2 +PE 2 + Headloss
I am assuming KE initial is 0 because it is a storage tank, I used flow rate and pipe size to find the velocity then for KE2
Pressure 2 I assumed is 70 psi,
Why I am stuck :
Is best practice to assume that Pressure 1 is Patm so you have an oversized pump ? Realistically the pressure at the bottom of the tank and close by the pump is equal to the density*gravity*height which would make the head smaller.
My plan was to then take the calculated head loss, and flow rate then call vendor's asking for rough estimates.
Right now I am guessing that the 1200 gpm pump will be roughly ~$8000.00 .
Tougher Problem
I need to get a very rough estimate (order of magnitude) for an installed 5000 bbl ( 210,000 gal ) storage tank. Based on my understanding I think the major costs for this would be the tank itself, and pad/support for the tank. The only resource I have been able to find to help estimate this is matche.com . The issue I am having is this doesn't include the price for the pad, and 2, I am not confident in how they arrived at this number. Are y'all familiar with any good estimating guides ? Is calling manufacturers in the area and asking for rough estimates the best way to do this ?
