I'm currently facing a situation where I'd like to change a through hardened part to be only case hardened, but one critical feature of the part is it needs to resist deformation of a small ball detent dimple which will have a constant load of about 600lbf. I've run a static simulation in ANSYS with my material type and come up with a deflection of 0.0003", so I'm thinking a case hardening should work?
The area in question also need to resist wear from turning the part on the ball detent (at a very low rpm, greased).
Any information on how to take case hardening into account for design would be helpful.
