I have a question about nuclear energy

I get that my post is going somewhat outside of mechanical engineering. I'm a mechanical engineering student. Nuclear and mechanical engineering are often simultaneously involved with one another.

I was hoping someone could answer this question. The problem with nuclear energy isn't really nuclear itself. Rather, what kind of nuclear. I feel like the topic has been made too black and white. Oh it's nuclear? Sounds dangerous.

Doesn't thorium nuclear have less issues relating to the potential for a meltdown if something goes wrong? Let me know if anyone has any engineering experience or can explain what, if any, real issues of nuclear energy exist.
