Modeling crystal lattice and unit cells

I have been tasked with making model for some lattice and unit cell crystal structures to help my materials science professor. It does not need to be complex, but just something that will help students visualize what they look like.

I will just be modeling simple cubic, face centered, body centered and hexagonal close packed. I was thinking I will just get foam balls and wooden dowels to make them. I will cut them and structure accordingly.

Does that sound like it will be a good visual aid or do any of you have any other recommendations?
