Hi everyone, Ever since high school I really wanted to go into the field of mechanical engineering as I love the math behind design and design itself. Due to my teachers and my research in recommendations I am currently studying at Ferris State University. I love it here (already in a few clubs and on a team) but I found a huge problem that I never notice. The degree at Ferris is called Mechanical Engineering Technology of which I had no idea was different from Mechanical Engineering until today. I am extremely concerned with the impact this will make on my career and also with my enjoyment as I love the calculation side more than the build side.
I have been planning my education around keeping the idea of moving to Japan to work open and this is most likely a big problem. Almost every job that I find for engineers in Japan says a requirement of a 4 year mechanical engineering degree and I have not seen one that says technology (this was searched in English which excludes a lot of jobs). I also feel stuck as Ferris has an amazing study abroad program for Japan that would allow me to test the waters and is already in my schedule for my 3rd year.
I am way too late to switch this school year but I need to figure out if switching to another school and maybe taking an extra year of college would get me the education/degree that I actually want. I only have to take one calculus class past 1 and that sort of shows how little of the calculation side will be taught.
I am somewhat fine with this major since I have put so much effort already into making it work with Japan and my schedule but I am worried about the effect it will have on my opportunities for Japan and the US. I really dont want to leave this community which I already feel really well connected to but I dont want to ruin my future as well. I need any advice you guys could give me since I am feeling very stuck.
Thanks, Trey
TL:DR Enrolled in Ferris State for Mechanical Engineering Technology but I wanted Mechanical Engineering. Didnt realize the difference earlier and I would like advice on if I should transfer after this school year.
