I passed the FE exam earlier this year and have found the requirements for taking the PE exam to be somewhat vague. Oftentimes (depending on the state or who is explaining the requirements), they'll say something along the lines of needing to work "under the direct supervision of a licensed PE for 4 years". I work at a very small company (less than 15 people) where no one has a PE license. Now, luckily I live in Massachusetts, where I don't see the "PE supervision" part of the requirement(?), but I might move to another state before long.
Do I really need to provide exact chronological proof that I worked under a PE for four or five years, or is it just a matter of getting reference letters from PEs? And if so, why do certain states think an engineering license should spread like an impotent virus?
