I’m a Junior ME student and I’ve been working in a co-op position (this is my first work semester) at a steel mill. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t enjoy engineering but most of my time is spent on AutoCAD. I know that CAD/modeling is a huge part of engineering but I find it to be rather tedious and mostly “busy work.”
I really enjoy the times when I get to design something, and then help build/install it. Last week, I was able to help install something that I designed, and got to weld it up. I’ve also had the opportunity to supervise contractors performing work on site, which was awesome as well.
None of the engineers at the plant work outside. They go out and inspect things, take measurements, mark locations, etc but they don’t ever assist maintenance or anything like that.
Is it normal for some engineers to enjoy working with their hands more than sitting at a computer all day?
