How do control systems for vacuum part pickers work? How does the system know when to apply/release vacuum?

I would like to design a pneumatically actuated adhesive placement machine. The pneumatic actuator will be mounted vertically and a part placed in a nest below. The adhesive transfer tape will be retained on the end of the pneumatic actuator via vacuum. When the cylinder is actuated and the makes contact with the part, I would like the vacuum to release the adhesive.

How might I get the vacuum to release at the bottom of the stroke for the pneumatic actuator? Is this something that is best done with a position sensor on the actuator which shuts a solenoid valve on the vacuum line? How else might I control the vacuum release?
