How was this put together?

Hello,

I was trying to figure out how this mechanism was assembled.

There are two arms connected by a hinge. This hinge is basically a shaft. On the underside, it seems to have been pressed flat in to some sort of oval shape so that the shaft can't be pulled out. The upper side has a wide flange base at the bottom of the shaft which keeps the upper arm in place.

These two arms are sandwiched and yet there's enough clearance that it rotates smoothly.

Can someone explain how this was put together?
