Side Jobs and/or Contract Work

Hello all,

I'm currently a junior level engineering student working at a pipeline in-line inspection company. I was just curious as to what advice i can get for possible side jobs or contract work a mechanical engineer can do?

I feel like it's pretty common to do some 3D modeling but I'm curious as to what else is out there.

I'm also curious as to what it takes to get into positions like those.
