Would it be possible to break the cylinders/pistons of and engine up, and lay them flat along the underside of a car, but still all attached to a single crankshaft to allow for more room to be used for other things?

What’s the reason for having all the cylinders/pistons compacted together into a single box? Wouldn’t this design allow for more cylinders (if desired), and more room?
