Backlash in gearing (question)

I am trying to learn how to design my own involute spur gears, a lot of the information I have found while searching the web hasn't said much about how backlash is actually incorporated into the design, only that it is needed for machining tolerances, lubrication, thermal expansion etc. I understand what backlash is and why its necessary but not how its properly implemented.

My question is: Is there a standard for how backlash is supposed to be involved in my equations for designing involute spur gears? can anyone point me in the right direction for how to learn more on this topic?
