Calculate a Gas Spring Force for a metal lid.

Hi Guys,

This is my first time designing a gas spring system for a box. I am looking for guidance.

  • (2) Metal boxes with lids
  • Small Box Lid weighs 37 lbs
  • Large Box Lid weighs 61 lbs
  • Lid is horizontal, then pushed open to a vertical position @ 62 degrees angle.

What tools can I use to calculate the gas spring force I need to open these two lids. I need to strike the balance between enough force to open it, without too much to prevent closing it again :)

Here is my drawing showing the lid. Naturally the spring locations I am using now can be adjusted. This was based off using the following product from McMasterCarr
