Engineering Conversations

I'm a 3rd year undergrad in ME and almost all of my peers love talking about engineering topics like how certain laws are necessary in problems plus extra examples of the law, and making jokes about classes, engineering forefathers, and design absurdities, as well as references to concepts from other classes. I find myself in these situations often.

I'm normally sociable and like to joke around - but when it gets to engr topics with other engineers, I'm dead quiet. I enjoy engineering problems and solving them, and can easily explain things to someone who doesn't understand engineering topics. With engineers it's different. A large part of it is because I know the material well enough to apply it, but could I intelligently talk about the concepts, laws, or principles I'm using to do so - no.

So my question is 2 part -

  1. Is there a way to handle these situations better in the future other than changing topics? Professors at my university talk in this style too and I might come into these situations more often if I get a research position this summer.

  2. Is it an important skill to be able to talk shop with other engineers in the workforce? Or is this something that just comes up in university.
