Background:
I go to a university with a 4-month cycle co-op program and I'm currently in my first year of mechanical engineering. Due to personal circumstances, I had to miss my first co-op, meaning I'm behind a term of co-op experience in comparison to my peers. I am worried about the chances of me getting a co-op in the next cycle since I am at a competitive disadvantage and have no prior work experience in general. I'm trying to find ways to help boost up my resume with relevant experiences that can help me when I start applying to jobs in the next co-op round.
I am particularly interested in jobs related to manufacturing/automation, automotive, aerospace, and mechatronics.
What I've Done So Far:
- Joined a Formula 1 team at my university where I've machined some parts and plan to get more involved in the current build season.
- I have experience in CAD (AutoCAD and SolidWorks), and I might be able to do some CAD tasks with my Formula 1 team working in SolidWorks.
- I know how to code in Java and Python, and I'm currently taking a course on MATLAB.
Personal Project Ideas?
I've looked into working on personal projects to help gain relevant skills. The main issue is, I don't know where to start and what projects are worthwhile. I really only have until May to improve my resume as much as possible since that's when I'll be applying to jobs for the next co-op cycle.
Some ideas I've had were to create Arduino projects and perhaps creating simulations in MATLAB. But I've never done either of these so I'm not sure how to learn these skills. I've heard knowing Python is a skill employers sometimes look for too. What are some good project ideas that I could do in each of these and how do I learn?
