Request: help w/ gear mechanism

Hi everyone, I would like to make a mechanism that mimics the behavior of the rings in this footage (taken from an android game) : https://streamable.com/mqgt2

i.e. : gears that can be both linked and unlinked depending on the input gear.

I guess it might be done with some sort of ratchet and/or the kind of duplexing pendulum assembly found in most printers, but I have no idea how. Thanks in advance !
