Hello, this is my first time posting on Reddit, ever, but I need some advice. I just started a position at a small engineering firm straight out of college. For context, I had a very average GPA and no internships, so finding a job 3 months after graduation was amazing. However, I hate the environment.
The office is a shared space between all six engineers and it is dead silent the entire day because the owner, one of the engineers, doesn't like noise. I've been thrown at a couple of projects now that were lacking documentation, hadn't been touched in years, and was given little to no guidance. The firm took on some military projects for the first time just as I started so they are adapting their standards to fit military spec. That means that I have no idea what the standards for drawings, or anything, are and my drawings just keep getting sent back because they aren't up to spec. My only method of learning here has been trial and error, with no guidance, and it's sending my anxiety through the roof. I was assigned to design a hydraulic system for test fixtures even though I made it very clear that I have zero experience with hydraulics. I asked if he had any reference material or somewhere I could start and his answer was Google.
They haven't made their expectations for me clear so I have no idea if I'm adapting quickly enough. I don't know if I'm making a big deal out of nothing and this is simply the way that all entry level engineering jobs go. Any advice would be greatly appreciated because right now all I want to do is get out of there ASAP.
