Apprenticeship vs Academic

Hey all, I'm 35 years old and want to retrain into engineering, initially focused on wind turbine maintenance, but with aspirations to go into planning or design later in my career.

Currently there are two viable for options :

A) take a four year apprenticeship. I would gain a level 3 qualification (equivalent to age 16-17 school) and direct experience in turbines. It takes 4 years and is paid at a low level.

B) take a HNC in mechanical engineering, a level 4 qualification (equivalent to first year of university). It takes one year (can be done over two) and costs £7500.

Which route would you choose? Can you see any benefits (or costs) to either approach?

Advice appreciated.
