Compressor related question that i couldn't answer in an interview

The interviewer asked me:

"Why does the blade spacing decrease in successive stages of a compressor?"

I know that the length of the blade decreases in successive stages but I couldn't figure out the reason for the decrease in spacing. Does anyone know the answer to this question?
