How to decide which one to choose between Von Mises,Tresca and maximum principal stress?

This is in close context with the different yielding criteria in metals.I do not understand which one to choose out of the three while solving the yielding criteria problems.All seems appealing. It would be good if someone can highlight the preference hierarchy to use the form.
