What Mechanical Prototyping Kit do you use?

I am trying to build some mechanisms with gears, pulley, linkages, etc. I need to actually build it to do it, instead of just drawing.

I don’t want to go into Fusion 360 and 3D print a part every time to prototype because I would need to focus on a lot of other variables to make them work. But these other variables don’t matter at this time, as I am just playin around.

I search mechanical kits and the only thing that comes up are “STEM toys” targeted to kids lol. Is there a professional LEGO Technic or K’NEX? Or do professionals prototype with these?
