Engineering question

Hey! So this isn't a "design this for me" post, and I don't want it to come off that way, so I won't even mention what I am trying to create. My question is,

If I wanted to create some (somewhat simple?) mechanical contraption but lacked the knowledge to do it myself, what steps should I take to try and find a solution or somebody that can help me?
