How do ball and joint sockets stay attached so the ball doesn’t just fall out?

This probably seems like a very naive question, but I am a high school student working on a design and I just started wondering. I understand how muscles keep tension for these joints in the hips and shoulders, but how does it work when it’s just cold metal or 3d printed plastic?
