I’m sure I’m not special in this aspect, but I went into engineering because of a love of gadgetry and consumer product design (specifically video game related) and wanting to be a part of making it.
I’m in the Greater Seattle area, so there are some places including Microsoft, Oculus (or Facebook in general), Amazon, etc that have this kind of work, but I’m having such a hard time getting my foot in the door. There are jobs that I’m perfectly qualified for, I’ve had employees recommend me, and I’ve reached out to recruiters all with little to no luck. I know they have a bazillion applicants, but I do feel like maybe I’m just missing something that they’re looking for and I can’t really figure out what I’m missing or doing wrong and it’s very discouraging.
I think that part of what may be happening is that the company I work for is in the oil and gas industry, which might suggest to some people that the work I have isn’t applicable, but my whole job is cradle to grave product design of anything from electronic devices to hydraulic driven mechanical equipment. I’ll do everything from concepting to modeling to FEA work to fabricating and assembling to actually using the products in field work. My experience really closely matches the job descriptions of jobs I’ve applied for since a lot of them are prototyping focused. The other thing I’m assuming is a factor is that I’m just coming up on 3 years of work after graduation. I always have the required amount of experience that a job posting is looking for, but I know there’s plenty of people out there that just have time on their side.
So i guess what I’m looking for is: does anyone have any tips of what I could do differently or try that would make me a better candidate? Or just thoughts on working in this kind of industry in general? My current plan is to remove anything from my resume regarding the field that I work in, but other than that I’m just trying to work on pet projects that are in some way similar to what I want to work on (including a portable GameCube, a gadget set for helping people keep track of whose turn it is on board games, etc).
Thanks for any and all help!
TLDR: I want to make consumer electronics products but am having a hard time landing a gig despite having the qualifications and experience
