Linearized energy storage vocabulary question

I need to improve on a mechanical energy storage system. I'm an engineer, but not a mechanical, and I need vocabulary help.

I have been using elastics to store energy, which are governed by Hooke's law. Hooke's law makes force linear wrt distance...thus making compression work non-linear wrt to distance.

I need a mechanism that linearizes the work-per-distance on compression\tension. Considering the utility of this need, it seems likely that it has name...I just don't know what it is. Any help?
