Question about how to proceed in terms of developing my skills as a hope-to-be mechanical engineer.

I’ve always enjoyed taking things apart, putting them together, understanding how things work, etc. Its always been a passion. I’m currently 23 and have been working construction since I was 16. I’m in school for mechanical engineering but am just not sure where to go in terms of BECOMING a mechanical engineer. Should I get a job elsewhere while still in school that actually involves my major? What kinds of things should I be doing to develop the skills I need? I guess I’m just a bit lost and am undergoing some burnout from school.
