What research field should I be looking for?

In my past three years at college, I've realized that I am interested in topology optimization (particularly generative design), and I've always had a passion for combustion engines, so my ideal career would be optimizing them, both for reduced weight and better thermals for addititive manufacturing using different kinds of topology optimization. I'm looking for a Master's program in the States where I can learn more about this, and hopefully get into research as well.

But before I do that, what broader research field should I be looking for? Design? (but most of these tend to be focused on structural optimization of say suspension parts, and don't discuss thermals as much) Heat transfer/thermal systems? (people tell me I should focus on getting into heat transfer, while learning generative design myself, is that a good idea?) Manufacturing? (since this is related to additive manufacturing, maybe those courses cover it properly) Of course, if I'm completely off the mark and there's other options I should be looking at, do tell!

What sort of universities would you recommend?
