After understanding the principle of transmission, standard, 5 speed, and CVT. Is there anything out there that documents the design process? How do they know the correct gear sizes to use? How does testing work? What's the process like making a transmission that fits all? Any videos or papers?

I was bitten by the transmission bug when my CVT failed and started learning the parts and processes of fixing it. Just makes me wonder the engineering behind them and the process it takes.
