How difficult is getting a job as a Mechanical Engineer, with a criminal record?

Last September I was charged with possession and use of LSD in the military. It was a misdemeanor charge. I am now trying to decide what to study in school and need to know what my job prospects would be like after school. I am concerned about jobs that contract for the government as I know that a military discharge would not be appealing for these companies.
