For an assignment I have, I need to change fasteners that hold a power supply that weights about 8 pounds. The old screws have a thread length of .62" with a thread callout .190-32 UNF-3A, the new screws that I am changing to has a thread length of .32" with the same thread callout (.190-32 UNF-3A). All the threads are engaged, and I believe the decrease in thread length will still be okay to hold the power supply, but I just want to double check with some people here. Is there a rule of thumb on how many threads should be engaged to hold something? If you could link a source it would be much appreciated.
