What is the value of a BSME in the USA?

I studied chemistry in school, but over my professional career moved more and more toward the design of chemistry instrumentation. Lately I was hired at a new company and they printed "mechanical engineer" on my business cards. I can feel that this is my future, I don't think the chemistry degree is helping me out anymore. Now that I've accepted that at the ripe age of just past 40, is it worth it for my future prospects to try to get a BSME? How much do people hiring in this field look for that? Should I join ASME? Any other long-term advice?
