Steamfitting to Mechanical Engineering?

Hi Im a 29 year old male from East Coast Canada who currently holds a red seal journeyman ticket in Steamfitting/pipefitting. I belong to a union and although the job compensates very well, work comes and goes seasonally and this cycle usually leaves me unemployed a few months per year. I work long hours when I do, mainly in oil and gas plants, oil refineries and pulp and paper mills installing new piping systems and maintaining current ones. My goal is to eventually find a more design pr project management related career in the mechanical feild with hopes of landing a job in some sort of renewable energy tech industry. What kind of jobs can I expect in this area if I take a two year mechanical technolgy program? In what ways will my journeyman experience help me in my mechanical engineering career? Thanks for the advice!
